Jurors have been presented with video evidence depicting the apprehension of Sara Sharif’s alleged murderers by police officers as they disembarked a flight upon their return to the United Kingdom. These three relatives of Sara had departed for Pakistan on August 9, 2023, which was the day following her death at the family residence in Woking, Surrey. Upon their return on September 13, as law enforcement officers approached their seating area on an Emirates flight, Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, was observed raising her hand and stating: “I think you’re looking for us.” Ms. Batool, aged 30, Sara’s father, Urfan Sharif, 42, and her uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, are currently on trial at the Old Bailey, where they have entered pleas of not guilty to charges of murder and causing or allowing the death of a child. Sara’s remains were found in a bunkbed within her residence on August 10, 2023. The jury had previously been informed that she had endured being hooded, burned, bitten, and beaten over a period exceeding two years of abuse. The video footage depicts several officers, identifiable by police markings on their backs, boarding the aircraft from Dubai seven minutes after its arrival at Gatwick Airport. Upon approaching Mr. Sharif, officers inquired if he possessed a bag, to which he responded negatively. Subsequently, he was handcuffed while still on the aircraft. The recording then displays Mr. Sharif positioned near a police van, where he was formally arrested on suspicion of his daughter’s murder. Additionally, the video captures Mr. Malik and Ms. Batool being arrested after disembarking the plane, also on suspicion of murder. All three individuals facing charges underwent separate police interviews the day following their detention. Each chose to offer no comment in response to questions posed by officers. On Friday, the jury was also informed that social services had opted against pursuing further action, notwithstanding a referral from Sara’s school after bruises were observed on the girl several months prior to her death. In March 2023, five months before Sara’s body was found at the family residence in Woking, Surrey, her teacher observed a bruise on her chin and a “dark bruise like mark on her right eye.” Sara explained that her eye was merely very itchy and that the mark on her chin resulted from a fall while using her rollerskates. The 10-year-old girl was subsequently questioned by the headteacher, who inquired about her well-being. The court was informed that Sara concealed her face and provided a narrative that differed from the one she had initially shared with her teacher. The school reached out to Children’s Single Point of Access for guidance, and it was determined that a referral to social services was necessary. On March 16, six days after the bruises were first observed, social services made the decision not to proceed with further action regarding the referral. The subsequent month, Sara’s father notified the school that Sara would be withdrawn for home schooling. The ongoing trial at the Old Bailey is proceeding.
