Artists have drawn inspiration from the men’s restrooms within a Victorian hotel, leading to the creation of an 88-page comic book. This collection of stories, titled “The Secrets of the Majestic,” is currently on exhibition at the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate, where it will remain until March 2025. The facilities at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate are recognized for their elaborate Victorian design, featuring ornate brassware, tiling, and wood panelling. Chris Mole, the anthology’s editor, based in Sheffield, stated that he assembled comic artists to develop this compilation of narratives. He conceived the idea during previous comic conventions hosted at the hotel. Mole commented: “After several years of mucking around taking pictures in the toilets, I decided the time was right to put together an anthology of stories exploring why the toilets are like that.“This is the result, a collection of short stories which explore various explanations and theories for such an opulent porcelain palace, from horror to action to science fiction and fantasy.” The hotel established itself as a prominent landmark in Harrogate upon its opening in 1900, serving as a luxurious retreat for spa guests. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Thought Bubble Festival convention, an annual comic art festival that draws 15,000 visitors and over 500 artists to the town. North Yorkshire councillor Simon Myers remarked: “Who would have thought that a grand set of hotel toilets could spark such creativity?“It is this quirky, unexpected angle that makes it an exciting exhibition and as such we hope to not only appeal to traditional art lovers but also comic art fans opening our doors to a broader audience.”
