Police intercepted a driver whose vehicle’s exterior was decorated with Christmas lights, citing safety concerns and potential distraction to other motorists. Officers acknowledged acting “a bit of a Grinch” but stated that the Volkswagen, observed in Wrexham on Friday, did not comply with road legality requirements. North Wales Police issued a statement, advising, “We advise that you keep your Christmas tree lights on your Christmas tree and not on your car.” The force elaborated that such decorations “causes distractions to other road users, it could cause injury to other road users and, worst of all, they were stuck on with Sellotape.” According to a Facebook post from the force’s roads policing unit, the driver received “strong words of advice.” The post further stated, “We had to be a bit of a Grinch when we spoke with this driver, kindly asking him to remove the few hours work he spent decorating his vehicle.” It concluded with the message, “Enjoy the festive period but please keep the decorations on your tree.” Last Christmas, Gwent Police also stopped a driver in Newport for covering their car with multi-coloured fairy lights. That force explained that displaying red lights at the front of a vehicle or lights other than red at the rear is “illegal and confuses other road users.” Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
