Station Road in Ely, Cambridgeshire, experienced a blockage after a van became wedged beneath what is known as Britain’s “most bashed” bridge. The incident led to the road being closed for vehicle recovery operations. Network Rail designated the railway structure as the most frequently struck bridge in the UK, having documented 18 incidents during the 2023-24 period. Earlier this year, in February, the same bridge, situated close to Ely railway station, was inaccessible for over two hours when a removal van also became trapped underneath it. A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police commented on the event, stating: “The driver of this van missed or missjudged the ‘very low bridge’ sign in Station Road, Ely, this lunchtime.” They added: “As a result the road is currently blocked while the vehicle is recovered.”
