A company operating a nursery reported that a minimum of three bonsai trees were taken during a burglary. Herons Bonsai, located near Lingfield, Surrey, stated that these valuable “major specimen” trees were stolen in a break-in that occurred on October 23. Peter Chan, the managing director of Herons Bonsai, confirmed that the incidents have been reported to Surrey Police. One of the trees that was stolen began its growth in 1984 and was present at Herons for restyling purposes. A second tree is a Chinese Elm, characterized as “massive,” which was at the location for grooming. These two trees are typically housed at RHS Wisley. A third stolen tree had been acquired by Mr. Chan from Telford on October 5. Mr. Chan is a prominent figure in the bonsai community and recently made an appearance on Gardeners’ World. Surrey Police has been contacted for a statement.
