Valencia has dismissed head coach Ruben Baraja following the team’s performance of only two wins in 17 La Liga matches this season. Baraja had a 17-year professional career, earning 43 caps for Spain. Baraja, a former player for the club from 2000 to 2010, assumed his managerial position in February 2023. He successfully ensured the team’s survival in the 2022-23 season, avoiding relegation by a margin of two points, and subsequently led Valencia to a ninth-place finish in the previous season. Nevertheless, the 49-year-old is leaving his role with the club currently positioned 19th in La Liga, trailing safety by four points. The club stated, “He helped stabilise the team in a complicated situation and last season, he contributed to implementing competitive values that brought Valencia closer to the fight for European positions.” Valencia further commented that Baraja is considered “one of the greatest legends” in the club’s history, and that the choice to terminate his employment “has been very difficult to make”. As a player, Baraja achieved five trophies during his 10 seasons with the club, among them two league titles and the Uefa Cup. During his last match as manager, Valencia played to a 2-2 draw against Alaves on Sunday, which allowed them to move off the bottom of the league table, surpassing Real Valladolid on goal difference. The former Spain international, who participated in the 2002 World Cup, has prior managerial experience with Elche, Rayo Vallecano, Sporting Gijon, Tenerife, and Zaragoza. Valencia is scheduled to play against the current champions, Real Madrid, in their upcoming La Liga fixture on 3 January.
