Tributes have been extended to Valencia within the football community, notably during Real Madrid’s Champions League match against AC Milan on Tuesday. Valencia’s La Liga fixture scheduled for Saturday against Espanyol has been postponed as the city continues to manage the repercussions of severe floods that affected eastern Spain last week. Additionally, Levante, another club based in Valencia, has had its second-tier match away at Tenerife, set for Sunday, also postponed. The flooding in the Valencia region, which commenced last Tuesday, has resulted in a minimum of 218 fatalities. Last week, Valencia’s Copa del Rey encounter with Parla Escuela and its La Liga fixture against Real Madrid were both previously postponed. A statement issued by Valencia read: “At this time, football is secondary and all efforts must go to aid those affected by the tragic aftermath of the DANA weather phenomenon, to whom Valencia CF would like to express their deepest condolences and support.” Levante commented: “We would like to thank La Liga, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and CD Tenerife for their sensitivity and understanding, as well as the numerous displays of affection and help that we are receiving in these difficult times from all over Spain and also internationally.” “Our focus during these days will continue to be on collaborating and reinforcing the work that the emergency services and volunteers continue to carry out, as well as on supporting all those affected by this catastrophe.” Managers including Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, and Barcelona’s Hansi Flick had previously voiced criticism regarding the decision to proceed with any La Liga matches last weekend.
