Michael Sullivan spent more than 27 years incarcerated in a Massachusetts prison for a murder he consistently maintained he did not commit. He gained his freedom in 2013, following a new trial and the application of new DNA technology that conclusively demonstrated his innocence. Earlier this month, Sullivan was awarded $13 million (£10 million) by the state, although Massachusetts regulations limit compensation for wrongful convictions to $1 million. Sullivan, who lost his mother and four siblings during his time in jail, stated that the funds will “never make up the years” he lost. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
