A recall has been issued for organic and baby carrots distributed in grocery stores throughout the United States, following an E. coli outbreak that has resulted in one fatality. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US reported that 15 individuals are currently hospitalized, with a total of 39 cases identified across 18 states. This recall pertains to bagged carrots supplied by Grimmway Farms to major supermarket chains, such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods’s 365, Target’s Good & Gather, Walmart’s Marketside, and Wegmans, among others. Authorities have indicated that while the affected items are probably no longer available for purchase in stores, they might still be present in consumers’ residences and should be discarded or brought back to retailers for reimbursement. The majority of individuals affected reside in New York, Minnesota, and Washington, with additional cases noted in California and Oregon, as reported by the AP news agency. The CDC specified that the recalled organic whole carrots lack a printed best-if-used-by date on their packaging but were sold between August 14 and October 23. Furthermore, organic baby carrots with best-if-used-by dates ranging from September 11 to November 12 are also subject to the recall. Beyond disposing of any recalled items, the CDC advised individuals to clean and sanitize any surfaces that might have come into contact with the products. Symptoms associated with O121 E. coli encompass intense stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, typically appearing three to four days after bacterial ingestion. While most individuals recuperate without medical intervention, some may experience severe kidney complications necessitating hospital admission, the CDC further stated. These E. coli incidents connected to carrots follow a separate prominent outbreak in the US, which was associated with slivered onions served on certain McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers. That prior incident led to illnesses in 104 individuals. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had previously reported one death in October and 34 hospitalizations stemming from that particular outbreak.
