Students from various universities across Hampshire have collaborated to develop a multi-media exhibition centered on convenience stores. The initiative, titled “The Corner Shop and Portal into Other Worlds,” is a joint effort between Solent University and Winchester School of Arts. It also received assistance from Southampton Forward, a charity dedicated to fostering the city’s culture. Creative producer Darryl Vydelingum stated that the shopkeepers he interviewed were a significant source of inspiration, noting that “their stories are rarely, if ever, told.” Grace Dagnell, a student participating in the project, remarked: “It’s really important to highlight the cultures in Southampton, and all the different personalities you meet in each shop.” Mr. Vydelingum explained that the concept for an art project inspired by corner shops originated during Southampton’s bid for UK City of Culture. He commented: “When they didn’t win, they really wanted to continue some of the projects and mine was one of them.” Convenience store owners throughout the city partnered with Mr. Vydelingum, a group of art students, and Southampton Forward to create an exhibition of artworks that convey the narratives behind each establishment. Nasz Sklep, one of the participating shops, has been serving its community for over 10 years. Owner Fathey Singh expressed his satisfaction that the project acknowledged the individuals working in corner shops. “I try to cater for all my customers, so I’ve got everything here and that’s what makes it unique because you can get it at your doorstep,” he said. Prior to the project, he admitted that he “hadn’t given much thought” to the demand for stores like his. He added, “Actually, corner shops have become stronger and stronger,” observing that local shops continue to hold a place in neighborhoods despite the proliferation of supermarkets. Fashion students from Winchester School of Art designed garments inspired by various occasions when people might visit a corner shop. These themes included: Office and workwear, luxe wear, and party wear. Solent University students photographed their designs and were also responsible for the models’ makeup and hair. Megan O’hara, a student from Solent University, stated: “Obviously the outfits are very exaggerated versions of the different ‘moments’ you might pop to the corner shop, but it’s really cool to see all the different colours and designs on display.” For updates, BBC Hampshire & Isle of Wight can be followed on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
