An independent investigation has been initiated following the emergence of a document, referred to as a “toughness sheet,” which reportedly contains criticisms of members of a university rowing team. This material, connected to the coaching practices of the Oxford Brookes University Boat Club, was disseminated via WhatsApp. The BBC has reviewed an unverified version of this document, which features remarks alongside the names of rowers, including phrases like “Put the pies down” and “Get a haircut”. British Rowing had previously stated its awareness of the concerns and its collaboration with the university. The university has since engaged legal counsel to examine the allegations. Oxford Brookes University indicated that the inquiry would assess if the online shared materials align with its dedication to fostering a university environment that is “inclusive and respectful”. Furthermore, the investigation will scrutinize the club’s behaviour and culture, and determine if any legal infractions occurred. The university had previously expressed that it was “appalled” by the content disseminated in the messages. The BBC has also viewed an unverified WhatsApp message from a senior member that refers to the “toughness sheet”. This message demanded that an individual “own up” to sharing a photograph of the document online, warning that failure to do so would result in them being “tracked down”. The document itself contains additional criticisms directed at particular team members, including remarks such as “Toughen up. Get serious”, “Stop asking so many questions”, and “Watching you row is like watching paint dry”. The university stated that once the law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper completes a report based on its findings, it will evaluate whether additional actions are necessary. Current members and those who have recently departed the club (defined as individuals who left within the past five years) are encouraged to reach out to the lawyers if they wish to participate in the investigation. British Rowing, which serves as the sport’s governing body, previously affirmed that “creating a safe and respectful environment for everyone in the rowing community is our priority”.
