A new training center, affiliated with the United Nations, is scheduled to commence operations at the University of Surrey. This international facility, set to open on Monday, will concentrate on disseminating knowledge and delivering training with the objective of enhancing the UK’s capacity to address climate change. A university spokesperson indicated that the center will work to develop sustainable economic practices, thereby contributing to the advancement of the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals, which include targets such as affordable and clean energy, reduced inequalities, and the eradication of poverty. Prof. Amelia Hadfield, the newly appointed director of the center, stated: “For us, and our community, sustainability reflects our deep, shared commitment to rebuilding a thriving planet for future generations.” Operating as part of the university’s Institute for Sustainability, the center, officially known as CIFAL Surrey, will provide training and resources to national and local governmental bodies, businesses, and community organizations. A representative from the UN Institute for Training and Research characterized the University of Surrey as a “renowned global institution at the forefront of innovation and learning”. Guildford Borough Councillor Tom Hunt commented: “The initiative will play a big role in driving sustainable development.” He further added, “One of our key priorities as a council is to create a more sustainable borough.” This new center represents the second UN-affiliated establishment located on the University of Surrey campus, following the opening of the Centre of Excellence on Ageing in 2023.
