The Hamas-run health ministry reports that an Israeli air strike in Beit Lahia, located in northern Gaza, has resulted in at least 93 individuals being either dead or missing. The United States described this attack as “horrifying”. According to rescuers, a five-storey residential structure sustained a direct hit. Social media videos depicted bodies lying on the floor, covered by blankets. The Israeli military stated it was “aware of reports that civilians were harmed today [Tuesday] in the Beit Lahia area” and indicated that the incident’s details were under investigation. For the past two weeks, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been conducting operations in northern Gaza, specifically in the regions of Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun. Hussam Abu Safia, director of the Kamal Adwan hospital in Jabalia, informed the AFP news agency that the hospital was treating children but faced difficulties in patient care due to insufficient staff and medicines. Abu Safia further stated, “There is nothing left in the Kamal Adwan Hospital except first aid materials after the army arrested our medical team and workers.” Last week, the IDF conducted a raid on the hospital, asserting that it was being utilized by Hamas fighters. Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman, conveyed that the US was “deeply concerned by the loss of civilian life in this incident. This was a horrifying incident with a horrifying result.” He also highlighted “reports of two dozen children killed” in the strike. Miller remarked that the “tragic cost to civilians” from this recent strike “is another reminder of why we need to see an end to this war.” Israel asserts that its military operations in northern Gaza aim to hinder Hamas’s regrouping efforts and alleges that Hamas embeds itself within the civilian population, an accusation Hamas refutes. On Tuesday, Israel issued a statement claiming it had killed 40 “terrorists” in Jabalia and had “eliminated many terrorists” in central Gaza over the preceding 24 hours, including individuals who “attempted to plant explosives near the troops.” The northern Gaza Strip is experiencing an escalating humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of residents enduring dire living conditions. On Friday, UN human rights chief Volker Türk stated that “the Israeli military is subjecting an entire population to bombing, siege and risk of starvation.” He further commented that it was unacceptable for Palestinian armed groups to reportedly operate among civilians, including within shelters for displaced persons, thereby endangering them. On Monday, Israel’s parliament passed legislation to prohibit the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, Unrwa, from operating within the country, prompting concerns that aid delivery to Gaza could be significantly affected. Israel initiated a campaign to dismantle Hamas following the group’s unprecedented assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and 251 individuals being taken hostage. The health ministry reports that over 42,924 people have been killed in Gaza, with its figures not differentiating between civilians and fighters. Israel currently restricts independent access to Gaza for international journalists from media organizations, including the BBC, which complicates the verification of information on the ground.
