The United States Air Force (USAF) has confirmed the observation of several unidentified drones above three airbases in Britain. These events, involving “small unmanned aerial systems,” took place from Wednesday to Friday, with sightings reported over RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, as well as RAF Feltwell in the adjacent county of Norfolk. The USAF, which operates these facilities, stated that it remains uncertain whether the drones are deemed hostile at this point. While declining to specify if any defensive measures were deployed, the USAF affirmed its “right to protect” its installations. A spokesperson for the USAF in Europe provided a statement: “We can confirm that small unmanned aerial systems [UASs] were spotted in the vicinity of and over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell.” The spokesperson added that “The number of UASs fluctuated and they ranged in size/configuration.” It was also stated that “The UASs were actively monitored and installation leaders determined that none of the incursions impacted base residents or critical infrastructure.” The statement continued: “To protect operational security, we do not discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation. “We continue to monitor our airspace and are working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities and assets.” RAF Mildenhall serves as the primary base for the USAF’s 100th Air Refueling Wing. RAF Lakenheath houses USAF F-35A and F-15E fighter jets, while RAF Feltwell primarily handles logistics and provides accommodation for military personnel. A spokesperson for the British Ministry of Defence, the owner of the bases, commented: “We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites. “This includes counter drone security capabilities.”We won’t comment further on security procedures.”
