Uncertainty has emerged concerning the proposed £330 million waste incinerator project slated for the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station site. This facility received approval from Nottinghamshire County Council’s planning committee in 2021 and was subsequently endorsed by the government in 2022, notwithstanding objections from environmental groups. Uniper Energy, the owner of the site, has stated it is now “looking at alternative options for the future” following a decision by one of its former shareholders not to continue with the project. The UK’s final coal-fired power station ceased operations on 30 September. Demolition of the site is scheduled to commence after a two-year decommissioning process. The planned incinerator, officially named the East Midlands Energy Re-Generation (EMERGE) Centre, is designed to process nearly 500,000 tonnes of waste annually, thereby decreasing landfill use and producing sufficient energy to supply 90,000 homes. Opponents of the plans previously asserted that incineration releases substantial quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The Local Democracy Reporting Service has now learned that Fortum, a Finnish state-owned entity and a former shareholder of Uniper, will not be moving forward with the project, having divested its shares in the company. Fortum completed the sale of its shares in 2022, resulting in Uniper being almost entirely owned by the German government. A spokesperson for Uniper reiterated, “We are looking at alternative options for the future.” Michael Edwards, a Nottingham City Council Meadows ward councillor, voiced his concerns regarding the facility’s future during the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire joint committee on mineral and waste planning meeting held on Friday. In reply, David Arnold, who serves as the head of planning and environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, stated: “There is planning permission at Ratcliffe and that has not been implemented yet. We don’t know whether that will be implemented.” He added, “They have got until March next year and that is with Uniper. It is on their land and because of these circumstances it may mean they change their minds.”
