The United Kingdom’s most senior male resident is soon to commemorate his 110th birthday. Donald Rose, a veteran who survived a bullet wound to his leg during World War Two, will be presented with a cake at a wartime-themed gathering scheduled for December 24 at the care home where he resides in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Mr. Rose’s birthday celebration will be attended by Kate Fennelly, the Mayor of Erewash. This event takes place mere weeks after he participated in a charity function at St James’s Palace in London. Ms. Fennelly, who previously served in the RAF, stated: “Donald is a lovely character and a true national treasure. The borough is proud to cherish him as its most senior resident.” At the age of 25, Mr. Rose enlisted in the Queen’s Royal Regiment, subsequently undergoing training as a sniper. He saw service in North Africa and Europe, and he attributes his longevity to the salty water he was compelled to drink during his tenure as a Desert Rat. Leading up to his birthday, Erewash Borough Council reported that a community forum had been “flooded with salutes” for Mr. Rose. One particular message read: “What an incredible man – and incredible age.” Charlie Smith commented: “He was at the Ilkeston remembrance parade. He is such a wonderful man, not only for what he has done for us, but who he is as a person.” Rebecca Bramley posted: “I love reading about this gent. I’ll be dropping a pressie off on Christmas Eve.” David, Mr. Rose’s son, who is in his 70s, shared: “He’s my father, he’s my hero.” For updates, follow BBC Derby on Facebook, X, or Instagram.
