The University of Hertfordshire has reported the theft of the Cosmodrome, identified as the United Kingdom’s largest mobile, inflatable planetarium. This facility was stored in a trailer adjacent to the observatory in Bayfordbury, near Hertford. Its functions include educating schoolchildren about space and making appearances at music festivals. The university expressed that it was “utterly heartbroken” by the incident and urged the public to be vigilant for the inflatable structure. This portable planetarium, approximately the size of a house, has the capacity to accommodate 100 individuals. It facilitates shows, lectures, and audio-visual art through the incorporation of light, sound, and tactile experiences. Both law enforcement and the university have issued appeals this week for the planetarium’s recovery. The trailer containing it was removed between 20:40 and 21:40 BST on 21 October. Professor Dan McCluskey, who serves as the dean of the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, stated: “We regularly use this vital resource at large events, to provide thousands of people across the country with a magical learning experience into the heart of our solar system every year.“Our suspicion is that the thieves responsible wanted the trailer and got more than they bargained for.” Professor McCluskey further noted that the equipment holds no practical value for individuals lacking the necessary expertise. A silver Land Rover Discovery is believed to have been utilized in the removal of the trailer. PC Demi Jessop of Hertfordshire Constabulary commented: “The theft is devastating for the university.“It has wider repercussions for the public, including local schoolchildren, as they will no longer have the opportunity to explore and learn from it.” Members of the public are encouraged to submit information online or by dialing the non-emergency number 101, referencing crime reference 41/88452/24.
