Ukraine intends to enlist an additional 160,000 soldiers into its armed forces, coinciding with Russia’s territorial gains in the eastern part of the country. Russia has been progressing in the eastern Donetsk region and announced on Tuesday its complete seizure of the mining town of Selydove. This development also occurs amidst information indicating the deployment of some North Korean troops to Russia. The Ukrainian military has recently faced significant strain, partly attributed to Russia’s larger personnel numbers and more extensive resources. Oleksandr Lytvynenko, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, informed parliament on Tuesday that “There are plans to call up more than 160,000 people.” The AFP news agency indicates that this recruitment effort is scheduled to span three months. This declaration coincides with Ukraine’s ongoing deployment of forces for its operation in Russia’s Kursk region, which commenced in August. The Pentagon estimates that approximately 10,000 North Korean troops have been sent to eastern Russia for training. The United States stated on Tuesday that a “small number” of North Korean troops have been dispatched to Kursk, with an additional “couple of thousand” reportedly en route. South Korea has asserted that these troops are undergoing training at multiple sites, with many reportedly wearing Russian uniforms for concealment. A senior government official indicated a belief that up to 11,000 soldiers had already been deployed to Russia, including at least 3,000 in the western part of the nation. Last week, President Vladimir Putin declined to refute claims regarding the arrival of North Korean troops in Russia, subsequent to reports suggesting Pyongyang’s readiness to send thousands of soldiers to support its ally. This most recent mobilization effort follows legislation passed by Ukraine’s parliament in April, designed to facilitate the conscription of troops to combat Russian invading forces. The statute mandates that all men aged 25 to 60 register their information on an electronic database for potential call-up. Conscription officials are actively seeking individuals who have not registered, leading more men unwilling to serve to go into hiding. The objective of this measure is to increase military personnel, given the intense pressure on the armed forces as Russia persists in its advances in the east. Moscow has declared its control over the entirety of Selydove in the Donetsk region, along with nearby villages, as its attention shifts towards the city of Pokrovsk. This city represents a crucial transport hub, situated merely 18 kilometers (10 miles) distant.
