Russia and Ukraine have conducted their most extensive drone assaults against one another since the conflict commenced. According to Russia’s defence ministry, 84 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted across six regions, with several nearing Moscow, leading to flight diversions from three of the capital’s principal airports. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 145 drones targeting all areas of the nation on Saturday night, with the majority being downed. These intense bombardments occur amidst anticipation that US president-elect Donald Trump might exert influence on both parties to conclude the hostilities. Ukraine’s attempted assault on Moscow also marked its most significant attack on the capital since the war’s inception, characterized as “massive” by the regional governor. Officials stated that the majority of the drones were brought down in the Ramenskoye, Kolomna, and Domodedovo districts. In Ramenskoye, located south-west of Moscow, five individuals sustained injuries and four residences ignited from falling debris, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The ministry further indicated that 34 drones were shot down above the town. A drone attack in September resulted in the death of a woman in Ramenskoye. Last year in May, two drones were eliminated near the Kremlin in central Moscow, and multiple drone assaults targeted the Moscow City business district. In Ukraine, a minimum of two individuals suffered injuries when a drone struck the Odesa region. Visuals depicted fires emanating from certain structures, alongside post-impact damage. The Ukrainian air force reported that 62 of Russia’s Iranian-manufactured drones were intercepted, while 67 were “lost”. Additionally, 10 more departed Ukraine’s airspace, returning towards Russia, as well as adjacent Belarus and Moldova. Additional strikes were documented overnight leading into Monday, with Russia claiming it had eliminated 13 Ukrainian drones close to the Kursk and Belgorod regions. Concurrently, five individuals perished in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, after an aerial assault caused residential structures to catch fire, as stated by regional governor Vitaliy Kim. He also mentioned that a 45-year-old woman had been wounded and hospitalized. This development coincides with reports that Russian forces achieved their most substantial territorial advances in October since March 2022, based on an analysis of Institute for the Study of War data conducted by the AFP news agency. Nevertheless, Sir Tony Radakin, the UK’s chief of defence staff, informed the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that Russia experienced its highest casualty figures for a single month since the conflict began. He stated that Russian forces incurred an average of approximately 1,500 fatalities and injuries “every single day” throughout October. Significant conjecture has arisen regarding Trump’s strategy for the conflict following his election victory in the US. During his election campaign, the president-elect frequently asserted his ability to conclude the war “in a day,” yet he has not provided specifics on his proposed method. Bryan Lanza, a former adviser to Trump, informed the BBC that the forthcoming administration would prioritize attaining peace over facilitating Ukraine’s reclamation of territory from Russia. In reply, a spokesperson for Trump disassociated the president-elect from these comments, stating that Mr. Lanza “does not speak for him.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov conveyed through state media on Sunday about “positive” indications from the incoming US administration. He asserted that Trump, during his election campaign, expressed a desire for peace rather than an intention to impose defeat on Russia. Trump has conversed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since his electoral success, with a source informing the BBC that the discussion extended for “about half an hour.” Zelensky has previously cautioned against ceding land to Russia and has stated that Ukraine would be defeated in the war without US assistance. In his customary Sunday evening address to Ukrainians, Zelensky declared that “the only way to secure a lasting peace” involves strength and diplomacy operating in conjunction. Copyright 2024 BBC.
