Two Million Illicit Cigarettes Confiscated in Hull

This year, two million illicit cigarettes have been confiscated from various businesses located in Hull. According to Hull City Council’s tobacco control team, thousands of tobacco packs and vapes have also been seized. The team collaborated with Humberside Police and utilized detection dogs to uncover counterfeit items concealed in various locations, including behind a mirror, beneath a drain, and within a chute. Councillor Charles Quinn stated: “No matter how smart those selling and distributing think they are, their tactics and hiding places can and will be exposed.” In the previous month alone, authorities retrieved 239,280 cigarettes, 8,856 tobacco packs, and 3,397 vapes. A specific enforcement action focused on a significant distributor uncovered illegal goods valued at approximately £100,000. Indicators of counterfeit tobacco include the absence of health warnings on packaging, unfamiliar brand names, and lower prices. The council’s seizures of these imitation products revealed they failed to comply with safety standards or fire safety regulations. Quinn further commented: “Illegal tobacco isn’t just a cheaper option, it’s a serious problem.” He noted that beyond the dangers stemming from a complete absence of regulation, the reduced cost hinders individuals from quitting and specifically targets minors and young adults.
