The BBC has learned that Birmingham’s big wheel and an additional fairground ride, which were shut down after a nearby attraction malfunctioned and caused injuries to 13 individuals, are expected to resume operation in the coming days. On December 12, the City Star Flyer in Centenary Square began moving in reverse, leading to carriages dropping towards the ground, resulting in two people being hospitalized. Those who sustained injuries have reported being struck by flying glass and experiencing wounds to their face, legs, and arms. Separately, two individuals, aged 55 and 21, have been released on bail following their arrest on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and obstructing officers. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is also conducting an investigation into the matter. A total of three rides were closed subsequent to the incident, including Birmingham’s big wheel, a cherished Christmas tradition for numerous families. Although the City Star Flyer will stay closed as inquiries proceed, it is anticipated that the other two rides will be able to receive visitors again prior to Christmas. In a formal statement, the HSE conveyed that it “appreciated the concern” surrounding the incident and confirmed its collaboration with the pertinent authorities. The HSE further stated that specialists had visited the site this week, and an investigation would be undertaken to ascertain the precise sequence of events. Birmingham City Council additionally noted its awareness that Danter Attractions Ltd, the company operating the ride, was performing an independent evaluation of the two rides that were not implicated in last week’s incident. The Council’s statement indicated: “The investigation into the cause of the StarFlyer incident is ongoing led by the HSE, with all partners fully supporting.” It continued: “If and when Danter Attractions Ltd choose to reopen, the Council will seek further assurances that all the required independent industry standard approvals are in place to ensure the highest safety standards.” Previously, a spokesperson for Danter Attractions Ltd communicated that the company’s sympathies were with the individuals and families impacted by the crash. The spokesperson stated: “There is an ongoing investigation and we are fully co-operating with the authorities.” They concluded by saying: “At this time we are unable to provide any additional comment.”
