President-elect Donald Trump has selected Robert F Kennedy Jr, known for his skepticism regarding vaccines and a former independent presidential candidate, to serve as his health secretary as he forms his new administration. Mr. Kennedy, frequently referred to as RFK Jr, has previously disseminated health information that scientific experts have characterized as inaccurate. Should his nomination receive Senate confirmation, he would be tasked with leading a substantial agency responsible for areas ranging from food safety to medical research and welfare programs. Georges C Benjamin, the executive director of the American Public Health Association (APHA), stated that the organization intends to “absolutely oppose” Mr. Kennedy’s nomination. During an interview with BBC Newsday on Friday, Mr. Benjamin strongly criticized Kennedy’s suitability for the position. Benjamin asserted, “He is not competent by training, management skills, temperament or trust to have this job. He’s just absolutely the wrong guy for it.” He added, “He is really just a person without a health background who’s already caused great damage in health in the country.” Mr. Benjamin highlighted Kennedy’s past remarks that questioned the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, as well as potential consequences should another pandemic occur during his leadership. Benjamin further stated, “We’re going advocate as loudly and as often as we can to make sure that people know what a risk he is to the public and to the public’s health.” Mr. Kennedy’s nomination was part of numerous announcements made on Thursday evening, which also included Mr. Trump’s declaration of his intent to nominate North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum for interior secretary. Mr. Trump indicated that he would formally announce Burgum’s selection on Friday; Burgum is a former businessman who competed against the president-elect for the Republican presidential nomination. Mr. Trump had initially hinted at this appointment during a speech to supporters at Mar-a-Lago, his first public address since election night, by mentioning he would appoint Burgum to a “very big position,” before apparently choosing to reveal the decision directly. Additional nominations disclosed on Thursday encompass: In a statement, Mr. Trump expressed that he was “thrilled to announce” Kennedy’s nomination. There had been increasing speculation that Mr. Trump intended to assign a significant healthcare position to his former rival. At his election night victory party, he informed supporters that Kennedy desired to “help make America healthy again.” Mr. Trump’s statement on Thursday included: “For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation when it comes to Public Health,” and continued, “Mr Kennedy will restore these Agencies [Health and Human Services] to the traditions of Gold Standard Scientific Research, and beacons of Transparency, to end the Chronic Disease epidemic, and to Make America Great and Healthy Again!” The nominee is a member of a prominent family in Democratic politics, being the son of former US Attorney General Robert F Kennedy and the nephew of President John F Kennedy, both of whom were assassinated during the 1960s. The 70-year-old environmental lawyer initially sought the Democratic primary nomination this year before running for president as an independent; he subsequently suspended his campaign and endorsed Mr. Trump. He is recognized for his critiques of childhood vaccines, having stated in an interview last year: “I do believe that autism comes from vaccines.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which functions as America’s national public health agency and is among the entities overseen by the US health secretary, asserts: “Many studies have looked at whether there is a relationship between vaccines and ASD [autism spectrum disorder]. To date, the studies continue to show that vaccines are not associated with ASD.” Mr. Kennedy, who experienced a 14-year heroin addiction during his youth, has also expressed a desire to address America’s substance abuse crisis. He informed the Daily Mail last year, “We’re now seeing an epidemic of addiction, alcoholism,” adding, “But also just loneliness, despair, disassociation, alienation.” Throughout his presidential campaign, reports concerning Mr. Kennedy’s personal life frequently garnered more attention than his significant policy proposals. His disclosure of having suffered from a brain worm, along with a separate account of him disposing of a dead bear in New York’s Central Park, were prominent headlines for several days. Democrats promptly criticized the selection, with Senator Patty Murray describing the choice as “catastrophic” and characterizing Kennedy as a “fringe conspiracy theorist.” Republican Senator Susan Collins indicated that she found some of Kennedy’s “statements to be alarming” but affirmed her intention to provide him a fair hearing during the confirmation process. Mr. Trump has been assembling his senior team since his victory in the US election last week. His party is anticipated to secure the House of Representatives, which would result in Republicans controlling both the White House and the entirety of Congress. Marco Rubio has been put forward as the nominee for secretary of state, and former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence. However, his choice to nominate controversial Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has generated concern on Capitol Hill. Gaetz, a long-standing vocal supporter of Mr. Trump, was the focus of an active ethics investigation within the House of Representatives concerning accusations of sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, and improper use of campaign funds. Senator Dick Durbin, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, has requested the public release of the report’s findings regarding these allegations. Furthermore, Gaetz is considered a polarizing figure within his own party, having been instrumental in the removal of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year. Lisa Murkowski, a moderate Republican Senator, commented that Gaetz was not “a serious nomination for the attorney general.” Concurrently, Mr. Trump provided additional information regarding Elon Musk’s prospective role in his administration during his initial public address since his election night victory speech. The president-elect stated that Musk’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency is expected to release a series of reports in the upcoming weeks aimed at streamlining the US government.
