US President-elect Donald Trump has put forward veteran prosecutor Pam Bondi as his selection for attorney general. This nomination occurred hours after Matt Gaetz removed himself from consideration for the role. Bondi possesses extensive experience in law enforcement, having previously held the position of Florida’s attorney general. Bondi, aged 59, is a long-standing associate of Trump, having defended him during his initial Senate impeachment trial. While the loss of Gaetz, his initial preference for leading the Justice Department, represents a setback for Trump, his current nominee is anticipated to face fewer obstacles from senators responsible for confirming the appointment. In a social media announcement of his selection, Trump stated, “Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families.” Bondi has maintained a close relationship with Trump since his 2016 presidential campaign, having referred to him as a “friend” to voters at a recent Trump rally. In 2019, she became part of his White House staff, concentrating on “proactive impeachment messaging” and acting as both his legal advisor and defense attorney during his first impeachment, which concluded with his acquittal. In 2020, she remained a member of Trump’s legal team when it advanced false claims alleging the election was stolen from Trump through voter fraud. Additionally, she served on Trump’s Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission and, more recently, has led the legal division of the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank established by former Trump personnel. Should the Senate confirm her, Bondi would assume the role of the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, overseeing the Justice Department’s workforce of over 115,000 employees and its approximate $45bn (£35.7bn) budget. She would also be instrumental in efforts to fulfill Trump’s pledge to penalize his political adversaries upon his assumption of office. She has openly criticized the criminal charges filed against Trump, as well as special counsel Jack Smith, who brought two federal cases against Trump. On Thursday evening, Trump wrote, “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore.” He added, “Pam will refocus the DOJ [Department of Justice] to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again.” Trump’s additional objectives for the department encompass terminating “weaponised government,” safeguarding US borders, dismantling criminal organizations, and rebuilding Americans’ “badly-shattered faith and confidence” in the institution. Trump’s transition team anticipates that Bondi’s confirmation process will encounter fewer difficulties compared to Gaetz’s. In response to the announcement, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham forecasted that Bondi “will be confirmed quickly,” characterizing her selection as a “grand slam, touchdown, hole in one, ace, hat trick, slam dunk, Olympic gold medal pick”. Bondi’s nomination was announced approximately six hours after Gaetz declared he would not pursue the prominent cabinet position. This followed several days of discussion regarding the potential release of a congressional report concerning allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Upon announcing his withdrawal, the 41-year-old stated that the controversy surrounding his potential nomination “was unfairly becoming a distraction” to the incoming Trump administration’s work. The report contained the conclusions of an investigation initiated by allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Gaetz has strongly refuted these claims but indicated his desire to prevent a “needlessly protracted Washington scuffle” by stepping aside. Later on Thursday, Gaetz extended his congratulations to Bondi, describing her as “a stellar selection by President Trump.” It remains uncertain whether Gaetz, who resigned his House seat shortly after Trump initially considered him for attorney general, will now attempt to reclaim it. Since his decisive election victory earlier this month, Trump has appointed multiple close associates to senior roles within his administration.
