Rail travelers in the north of England are being advised to verify their journeys in the aftermath of Storm Bert. Northern reported that services between Workington and Lancaster remain suspended in both directions due to flooding in the Ulverston area. Limited services are currently operating between Workington and Carlisle, following the snow and rain experienced on Saturday. Routes connecting Manchester Airport with Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as Liverpool with Glasgow, and Edinburgh with Newcastle, are also affected. Northern cautioned that its network would likely experience weather-related disruptions on several other routes, potentially leading to cancellations announced at short notice. The company stated that “adverse” conditions prevented it from deploying replacement bus services. Avanti West Coast is scheduled to run services between Carlisle and Edinburgh, having canceled all trains on Saturday. TransPennine Express, which had “strongly” urged customers not to travel north of Carlisle on Saturday, announced that individuals holding tickets for this weekend are permitted to use them on its services tomorrow. Engineers from electricity North West were working to reinstate power overnight for the remaining 450 properties, having previously restored supply to over 11,000 other locations. The company reported that overhead lines sustained damage from “flying debris and ice accumulation,” with repair crews active since the initial damage report at 07:00 GMT on Saturday. Workington and Penrith were noted by the company as being particularly impacted by the storm.
