The scheduled demolition of a disused tower block has been postponed. This decision was made to prevent it from coinciding with the one-month mark of an explosion that resulted in two fatalities. Newcastle City Council had previously set 16 November as the date for a controlled explosion to demolish Hexham House, located in Newcastle’s Walker area. Nevertheless, in light of the deadly explosion that occurred last month in Violet Close, Benwell, the council stated that proceeding with the demolition on that specific day would be “insensitive.” The explosion, which took place in the early hours of 16 October, claimed the lives of seven-year-old Archie York and 35-year-old Jason Laws. Three individuals have since been arrested in connection with the incident. The controlled demolition in Walker has been rescheduled for 30 November, according to information obtained by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The project was originally slated for May but has encountered multiple postponements. A spokesperson for the council commented: “We felt it was insensitive for us to conduct a controlled explosion on this day [16 November], given the potential for it to remind those affected of the traumatic events that claimed the lives of two of our city’s residents.” The spokesperson added, “Work has been undertaken to weaken Hexham House in advance of the demolition, so we still need to conduct the demolition in the coming weeks. “We apologise if this causes any inconvenience but hope residents understand the reasons why we have taken this decision.”” The impending razing of the 16-storey Hexham House will mark the first explosive demolition carried out in Newcastle since 2008, when Sir Bobby Robson initiated the controlled blast of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery. Hexham House, which stands 43m (141 feet) tall, along with its companion structure, Titan House, has been a prominent feature of the area’s skyline since their completion in 1968.
