Torbay Council has confirmed it has reacquired control of Torquay Pavilion, following what it described as a “lengthy and challenging process”. The council’s planned repossession of the Grade II listed structure from its tenants, Marina Developments Ltd, was initially set for the close of September, but this timeline experienced a delay. Councillor Chris Lewis, who serves as deputy leader and cabinet member for place development and economic growth, stated: “The pavilion is a vital part of our local heritage, and we are committed to seeing it restored to its former glory.” He further acknowledged: “We know it has taken us longer than we anticipated to get to this stage, and we appreciate the community’s support and patience.” Lewis also commented: “Now we have full control of the building we can start to move forward with our plans to protect and restore it. “There is still long way to go until we can open the doors to the pavilion, but this milestone marks a new chapter for us and the community.”” According to the council, a team has already commenced work on securing the building’s interior windows. It indicated that initial repair efforts for the structure would be financed through Town Deal funding and a payment the council obtained from the lease’s surrender. Nevertheless, the council has not yet finalized a budget for the complete restoration project. The authority also mentioned the appointment of a commercial agent as part of its subsequent actions. It stated: “A strong preference of the council and the community is to attract an occupier that will enhance Torbay’s growing cultural offer and bring additional footfall to the area.”
