A family residing in Burgess Hill expressed being “overwhelmed” following an unexpected visit from Santa Claus, which occurred after a “tough year” marked by their toddler’s cancer diagnosis. The diagnosis of Ronnie’s cancer shortly after his first birthday rendered 2024 a difficult period for his parents, Emily and Barrie, and his brother, Charlie. Photographer Archie Tipple arranged the unexpected visit, which featured carol singers and a sleigh laden with presents, after Emily inquired about the availability of the local grotto. Emily stated, “It’s been a very lonely journey at times but this makes it all worth it. This means so much, more than anyone can ever know.” She further commented, “It’s very over whelming but I am very grateful as well,” adding, “It’s been a very tough year, but we’ll get there.” Mr. Tipple’s acquaintance with the couple began when they reached out to him to secure a photographer for their wedding in Brighton. The wedding, initially scheduled to take place in Portugal, was cancelled to allow the family to attend hospital appointments at the Royal Marsden. Mr. Tipple remarked, “They’ve had a rough year as a young family, it’s like everything was falling apart, so we wanted to create a wonderful night for Ronnie and his older brother Charlie, who has also been affected.” He further stated, “The response has been huge with lots of people coming along to sing Christmas songs outside their house and bring gifts.” Approximately 40 well-wishers, moved by Ronnie’s narrative, proceeded through the family’s residential estate, trailing the sleigh, which had been provided by the Mid Sussex Round Table. Shopkeeper Julie Richards commented, “It’s lovely to take part in something at Christmas which is about giving not receiving. There is more pleasure in something like this than you can ever receive in a gift.” Julie Holden, chief executive officer of Burgess Hill Town Council, stated, “This is a show of spontaneous community spirit. I think this says a lot about our town. It’s brilliant.” For updates, follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
