Individuals aged over 30 who are not extensively engaged with online platforms may be unfamiliar with names such as Asher Glean, Nicholas Flannery, and Kyra-Mae Turner. However, for frequent TikTok users, these individuals are likely prominent on their For You Pages. These creators are among those nominated for the inaugural UK and Ireland TikTok Awards. A total of 72 creators, collectively boasting over 101 million followers, have received nominations across 12 categories. The winners are scheduled to be revealed at a ceremony taking place in London on Tuesday evening. This event prompts the question of the rationale behind an awards show dedicated to social media video creators. Travel creators Jade Beaty and Ryan Losasso informed the BBC that “There’s a lot that goes into content creation,” noting that “A 30 second video can take days, even weeks to produce.” They further elaborated that “Awards like this can inspire a whole new wave of people to pick up a phone and make content.” Aly Meghani, a nominee in the fashion and beauty category, concurred, stating: “From the outside, content creation might seem easy, but there’s so much effort, time, and thought that goes into it.” Meghani, who balances a full-time job with content creation in his leisure time, believes the awards “shed a light on our dedication and gives us the recognition we deserve”. He also mentioned that his content “helps break stereotypes” and serves not merely as fashion inspiration but rather to “inspire people to truly be themselves”. TikTok’s influence is substantial, with 175 million monthly active users in Europe, and its videos have fueled several of this year’s most widespread trends. Certain trends, including “very demure, very mindful,” have transcended online platforms, evidenced by Dictionary.com designating “demure” as its word of the year. Conversely, Oxford University selected “brain rot” as its word of the year, defining it as the excessive consumption of low-quality social media content, which implies prolonged aimless scrolling on applications such as TikTok. According to Psychologist and Oxford University Professor Andrew Przybylski, the term “describes our dissatisfaction with the online world and it’s a word that we can use to bundle our anxieties that we have around social media”. Ayamé Ponder, a nominee for creator of the year, stated that she “gets both sides of the argument” but believes influencers “get a bad rep”. She informed the BBC, “They can roll their eyes all they want – I’m a star.” While her 3.8 million followers may primarily recognize her for comedy sketches, she is now utilizing her platform “to give back”. She explained, “I began to shift my purpose when I started seeing the injustices happening around the world.” Melissa McFarlane, head of operations for TikTok UK, Ireland & Nordics, indicated that the awards acknowledge a broad spectrum of content, ranging from “science experts shining a light on STEM subjects, to literature lovers sharing their favourite book recommendations”. She further asserted, “When you take a step back and think about the impact TikTok communities are having on reading, on the way we cook, even on the way we learn, it really is significant and deserves to be recognised; especially when most creators are just creative individuals with a passion.” McFarlane concluded that “Their contribution goes well beyond just ‘influence.'” The UK awards represent one of 20 such events scheduled worldwide this year, with each ceremony honoring individuals across diverse categories such as food, music, entertainment, beauty, and fitness. While some nominees produce common “get ready with me” or “day in the life” content, others have established unique niches that demonstrate their role in “changing the industry,” as stated by Meghani.
