Thurrock Council in Essex is poised to discuss new proposals aimed at generating an additional £18.2 million in savings for the next year. The council, which is effectively bankrupt and holds an outstanding debt of £887 million, achieved a similar level of savings during the current year. John Kent of the Labour party, who became the council’s leader in May, declared that the “budget proposals we are putting forward are based around our core principle that our residents have to come first”. Andrew Jefferies, the leader of the Conservative opposition, stated he would be “seeking reassurances that children’s and adults’ services won’t be affected”. Among the proposed initiatives is a saving of £1.2 million by regularly reviewing adult social care placements. The council leader informed the BBC that 10 complex children’s placements currently cost £7 million annually, and efforts are underway to bring their care within the borough. Mr. Kent indicated this would offer children “a better outcome closer to their support networks.” A redesign of the local healthcare system is projected to save £1.67 million. Furthermore, plans to implement charging for assistive technology for individuals receiving adult social care are anticipated to save £140,000. The council mentioned that some individuals could incur a £5-a-week charge, which would be means tested. Andrew Jefferies, the former Conservative leader of the council, expressed that he was “disappointed there is no assistance or discount for pensioners for green waste collections. Particularly in light of them losing their winter fuel allowance.” Mr. Kent responded: “We will do our very best to protect frontline services, we will protect the most vulnerable. “Where we are making changes to services we will minimise the adverse impacts of those changes to the daily live of our residents.”” A scrutiny meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening. The budget is expected to be finalized early next year.
