Argentinian officials have announced that three individuals face charges related to the passing of One Direction member Liam Payne. The vocalist passed away on 16 October following a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. According to Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office, one individual, who was with Payne, faces an accusation of “the abandonment of a person followed by death”. Additionally, a hotel staff member and another person have been charged with providing drugs. The identities of those apprehended have not been disclosed. Payne, aged 31 and a father-of-one, achieved widespread recognition in pop music after his appearance on The X Factor and subsequent rise to prominence with the boyband One Direction during the 2010s. Officials in Argentina have been looking into Payne’s last moments at the CasaSur hotel. Following the singer’s demise, law enforcement discovered substances in his hotel room and disposed of items and furnishings. It was previously reported that hotel personnel had contacted emergency services twice, stating they had a guest who had consumed “too many drugs and alcohol” and was “trashing the entire room”. The public prosecutor’s office stated on Thursday that toxicology screenings identified traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant within his system. A post-mortem examination concluded his death resulted from “multiple trauma” and “internal and external haemorrhage”, stemming from the fall from the hotel balcony. As per the prosecutor’s office, medical documentation also indicated Payne might have fallen while in a state of partial or complete unconsciousness. The prosecutor’s office asserts this eliminates the prospect of Payne acting consciously or voluntarily, and they have determined the singer was unaware of his actions and lacked any understanding of them. Furthermore, authorities have conducted nine searches of residences in Buenos Aires. They are still examining Payne’s damaged laptop and other confiscated devices. The prosecutor’s office further mentioned it has reviewed over 800 hours of video surveillance from hotel cameras and public thoroughfares, and gathered numerous statements from hotel employees, relatives, acquaintances, and healthcare practitioners. Payne’s remains were released to his family on Wednesday for repatriation to the UK. Subsequent to Payne’s passing, numerous tributes were received, including from his former partner Cheryl, his One Direction bandmates, and music executive Simon Cowell. Payne’s bandmates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles issued a joint statement expressing that they were “completely devastated” and would miss the singer “terribly”, further stating that the “memories we shared with him will be treasured forever”. Thousands of admirers also commemorated the deceased singer at remembrance gatherings both in the UK and globally.
