Following a seven-year police inquiry, thirty high-value vehicles that had been stolen and subsequently exported to Thailand have been repatriated to the United Kingdom. The National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) reported that these vehicles, with an initial combined value exceeding £6 million, were illicitly acquired by fraudsters during 2016 and 2017. Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) indicated that the automobiles, which included a Lamborghini Huracán Spyder, were located within showrooms and industrial areas across Bangkok. Sharon Naughton, who leads NaVCIS, expressed satisfaction that the vehicles could at last be given back to their legitimate owners. She further stated that the Lamborghini had been taken seven years prior from a businessman who operated a luxury car rental service, and he “couldn’t be more pleased” to see its recovery. Ms. Naughton also mentioned that numerous vehicles were owned by finance corporations. The DSI explained that the vehicles were initially obtained via hire-purchase contracts, then transported by air freight with fraudulent documentation to Singapore, and subsequently shipped to Thailand. The department additionally reported that operations conducted at nine sites in Bangkok led to the discovery of eight Mercedes Benz vehicles, five BMW M4s, five Porsches, and various other high-value models. According to the DSI, legal proceedings have been initiated against 13 individuals, among them the purported leader of the criminal group. It was also noted that five of the stolen automobiles remain untraced. NaVCIS operates as a police unit funded by the industry, with its operations hosted by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. Ms. Naughton commented: “Today is a good day to demonstrate how NaVCIS can dedicate resources and expertise to tackling vehicle crime.”
