Six athletes have been named as finalists for the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. This BBC accolade acknowledges exceptional athletic achievements over the past year. A total of eight awards are presented, including the primary honor, for which six individuals are competing: footballer Jude Bellingham, runner Keely Hodgkinson, darts player Luke Littler, cricketer Joe Root, Para-cyclist Sarah Storey, and triathlete Alex Yee. The Director of BBC Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, in consultation with his senior staff, extends invitations to a panel comprising 12 experts from the sports industry. This panel is designed to encompass a diverse array of participants from the sporting world, such as former athletes, sports journalists affiliated with UK publications, and representatives from the sports sector. BBC Sport endeavors to achieve an equitable gender distribution among panellists, ensuring their expertise spans a broad spectrum of sports, including Para-sport. Whenever feasible, the panel includes members from each of the UK’s constituent nations: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The composition of the panel is updated annually. Three representatives from BBC Sport are consistently part of the panel. For the current year, these individuals were Kay-Jelski, Philip Bernie, who serves as Head of Sport Content, and Executive Producer Gabby Cook. The panel convenes physically to determine the finalists for both the main award and the World Sport Star award, as well as to select the recipients of the Team and Coach of the Year honors. The production team for BBC Sports Personality furnishes panellists with comprehensive background details regarding the year’s leading sports figures and their accomplishments. Panellists retain the discretion to propose additional potential nominees who may not have been included in the provided briefing materials. The selection of the shortlist is achieved through deliberations guided by Kay-Jelski, who acts as the panel’s chairperson. Should a unanimous agreement not be attained for particular candidates, the panel might be requested to cast votes. If a tie occurs, the chairperson holds the authority to make the ultimate determination. Indeed, the panellists utilize the subsequent criteria when selecting the shortlist for the principal award: Demonstrated UK sporting successes at either a national or international level; Illustrated the extensive range and profound impact of UK sports; and Considered the ‘impact’ of the individual’s athletic accomplishment extending beyond their specific sport. These criteria are furnished to panellists, and they are reminded of them, both prior to and throughout the shortlisting procedure. The objective of the main award’s shortlist is to showcase the diversity and significance of sport within the UK. The selection methodology for Sports Personality experienced substantial modifications following 2011. In that particular year, an all-male list of nominees sparked controversy and drew criticism from certain athletes. Previously, sports editors from various UK newspapers and magazines were invited to submit their top 10 choices to the BBC, which were then publicly disclosed. Subsequent to 2011, a general agreement emerged that the BBC ought to exert greater oversight in the shortlisting procedure. Consequently, in 2012, the BBC implemented an expert industry panel.
