The Children’s Book Project, a charitable organization, aims to provide 50,000 books to school children residing in deprived areas, with the goal of inspiring a love for reading. The initiative is appealing to the public to contribute second-hand and pre-loved books at its Leeds base. The charity intends to distribute these books among 25,000 pupils in locations where “they are most needed”. A spokesperson for the project stated, “The difference books and stories can make to children’s lives is hard to overstate.” The entire operation relies on volunteers who establish collaborations with local libraries, businesses, and organizations to assist in collecting donations. Laura Thompson, regional coordinator at the Leeds Children’s Book Project, confirmed that the charity welcomes donations of books suitable for babies through to young teenagers. Thompson commented, “Not all families in Leeds can afford to buy books, and we know some children grow up in homes with very few books of their own or sometimes none at all.” She further remarked, “In the short time we’ve been up and running, we’ve already been amazed by the generosity of the people who’ve donated books and given up their time to come and help us.” Thompson highlighted the project’s reliance on volunteers, adding, “We’re powered entirely by volunteers and every single hour they’ve been able to give us has had a positive impact on the life of a child somewhere in Leeds.” The Children’s Book Project additionally stated its requirement for more volunteers, who will be situated at Seagulls on Water Lane.
