Residents residing in Broadstairs are being offered dedicated wheelie bins for the collection of autumn leaf fall in 2024. Thanet District Council is providing this service as part of its focus on leaf composting. Last year, the local authority’s cleaning teams commenced collecting leaves separately from other street litter. The council reported that this resulted in nine tonnes of leaves being sent for composting instead of to landfill. Council leader Rick Everitt stated: “Our cleansing staff are going to continue to do all they can to keep the footways clear but working with residents to support this is new for us and I’m excited for our local communities to be involved in this solution.” He further added: “The local volunteer groups that do litter picks all year round are a vital part of our community and we value all that they do to help keep Thanet looking its best.” All residents participating in the trial are volunteers, and the wheelie bins will be returned to the council at the conclusion of autumn. The council indicated that the scheme might be expanded across Thanet, contingent on the success of this trial.
