Thanet District Council has announced that repair work is scheduled to commence on two of Thanet’s publicly-owned museums. Thanet District Council (TDC) stated that scaffolding would be erected at Margate Museum and the adjacent Old Town Hall to facilitate roof and joinery repairs on both structures. The council indicated that this work is expected to last four weeks, during which the pathway connecting the two buildings will be inaccessible. Additionally, roof work is planned for a later date at the Dickens House Museum in Broadstairs, according to the council. TDC confirmed that this museum will close to the public starting November 4, with completion anticipated before its scheduled Christmas events. Furthermore, repairs are slated for the Tudor House in Margate to address damage resulting from vandalism. TDC noted that a specialist contractor is required for the Tudor House project, which might not commence until winter 2024 or potentially spring 2025. The council also mentioned that work is projected to begin at the Ramsgate Maritime Museum in spring 2025, funded through the Levelling Up Fund programme. The necessary work across the council’s museums was identified following a series of condition surveys, which determined the required investment for essential repairs and maintenance, according to the authority. Councillor Ruth Duckworth commented: “Each of our museums has its own unique displays, collections and stories and together they play an important role in enriching our offer for residents and visitors.” She added, “The planned repair works are the first step to bringing the museum buildings up to date, with the appropriate conditions for our important historical collections.”
