Repair work for Worthing Pier, which sustained damage from severe weather, is scheduled to commence. The pier, located in West Sussex, was shut down on 10 October following engineers’ discovery that an underside support had been compromised during a storm. Businesses operating on the pier had previously expressed feeling “blindsided” by the interim closure. Adur & Worthing Council stated its desire to be “keen to allow residents and visitors back onto the pier [to] allow the popular businesses to begin trading again” while emphasizing the necessity of ensuring it was “totally safe.” Provisional repairs are slated for execution during Wednesday afternoon’s tidal window. According to the council, the undertaking involves contractors constructing a new steel support framework beneath the pier. This structure will alleviate pressure from the compromised piles, enabling their replacement. This process will entail driving six steel piles into the seabed on both sides of the pier, followed by the installation of steel support beams and a steel truss atop these piles. A spokesperson for the council commented: “We will keep disruption to a minimum but unfortunately there will be some noise during the work – including in the early hours of the morning from Thursday.” The repair operation is anticipated to conclude in approximately one week.
