New funding has been secured, enabling over 70 “warm places and welcoming spaces” to become available to the public throughout Telford during the upcoming winter season. Telford and Wrekin Council allocated £16,000 to the Shropshire Community Foundation, designated to assist local community and volunteer organizations in establishing these sessions. Consequently, 33 groups successfully applied for grants of up to £500 individually, bringing the total count of such spaces across the borough to 71. These locations offer warm and sociable settings, designed to alleviate loneliness and provide individuals with a comfortable refuge during the winter months. Scheduled activities encompass community lunches, games, craft sessions, and opportunities for social interaction. Councillor Kelly Middleton, cabinet member for healthier, safer and stronger communities, stated, “So often, adult loneliness can be a big challenge, particularly during the winter, so these welcoming spaces are providing a vital lifeline to so many people.” Comparable initiatives have been in operation since 2022, initiated after the significant increase in energy expenses subsequent to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Among these, warm welcome sessions are conducted at Madeley Baptist Church, fostering friendship and companionship. June Hill, who assists in managing these sessions, commented, “People can come and enjoy the company, the games, the chat or whatever they want to do really.” Attendees receive warm provisions if required, along with beverages and various other items. Hairdresser Josh Humphries conducts complimentary sessions at Arleston community centre as part of this program. He remarked, “I think it’s really important just to try and create a little bit of positivity in people’s worlds.” He added, “I love making people feel the best version of themselves.” For updates, follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
