A group of four teenagers undertook a charity swim, covering a distance equivalent to that of the English Channel. The participants, George Nagle, 17, George Coverly, 17, Jack Minney, 17, and Henry Dean, 18, initiated this challenge as part of a business class project at The FitzWimarc School in Rayleigh, Essex. On Thursday, they successfully completed 1,352 lengths of the pool at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre, taking slightly over seven hours. The collective effort has generated close to £2,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. The teenagers commenced their endeavor at 7:30 GMT, ultimately swimming a total exceeding 33,000 metres. Coverly explained to BBC Essex, “We just thought it was a good charity.” He added, “We’re all men, so it’s something we can all relate to. One in eight men get prostate cancer, so we thought it was a good cause and we’d do something to help out.” Dean, who holds a third-place ranking for his age in 50m Butterfly, shared insights gained from his experience competing at the highest echelons of British swimming. He stated, “I’ve been teaching them front crawl.” Each of the teenagers individually swam over 300 lengths, concurrently promoting awareness through a social media campaign. Coverly remarked, “I’m really sore, all my muscles are really sore.” He also mentioned, “I haven’t swum in about two, three years.” Nagle commented, “We’ve had loads of messages from our classmates, family members and the local people.” He further noted, “People have just been supporting the cause and it’s a good cause.” Jack characterized the swim as a “really good achievement.” He recounted, “I used to swim as well but didn’t enjoy it much, so I stoppe.” He continued, “So I’m quite used to swimming but my body can’t handle it much.” The decision to organize this charity event was made by the teenagers as an element of their business course project. Manjola Carter, the teacher for the group at FitzWimarc, stated that a challenge of this nature had “never been done” throughout her eight years of teaching. She expressed, “They’ve done absolute amazingly and it makes me super proud of them all.” Carter elaborated, “They wanted to raise money for their chosen charity, so they came up with this amazing idea. “I was a bit shocked, thinking ‘will they be able to’.” She concluded, “It’s a long period of time to be swimming but they did amazing.” This content is copyrighted by BBC in 2024.
