The two individuals who died in a school shooting in Wisconsin have been identified as a teacher and a teenage student. Erin West, aged 42, and Rubi Vergara, 14, were fatally shot on Monday morning at a private Christian school located in Madison. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that both were pronounced deceased at the site of the incident. Investigators are currently working to determine the motive behind the actions of the suspect, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who opened fire on fellow students and staff members before taking her own life. A statement published on a local funeral website characterized Rubi Vergara as a freshman survived by her parents, a brother, and an extensive extended family. The statement noted, “She was an avid reader, loved art, singing and playing keyboard in the family worship band. She shared a special bond with her beloved pets, Ginger (cat) and Coco (dog).” Barbara Wiers, the school’s communication director, informed the Associated Press in a statement that West served as a substitute teaching coordinator. Wiers stated, “Our hearts are heavy with these losses.” Angel Brube, a seventh-grade student present at the school during the incident, informed CNN that he knew West well and characterized her as “kind and caring.” Rupnow, whose death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, possessed two handguns; however, police have stated they do not know how she acquired them and have not disclosed who purchased them. No determinations have been reached regarding potential charges against Rupnow’s parents concerning the shooting. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated on Tuesday that identifying Rupnow’s motive is a primary objective. He informed reporters, “But at this time it appears that the motive was a combination of factors.” In a distinct development on Wednesday, law enforcement in California issued a gun violence restraining order targeting a 20-year-old man who, according to authorities, had been in contact with Rupnow. Court documents indicate he was planning an attack on a government building and had communicated this plan to the 15-year-old in Wisconsin. Two additional students who sustained gunshot wounds on Monday are still in critical condition, while four other individuals received minor injuries. This content is Copyright 2024 BBC.
