Tanzanian rescue teams have reported establishing communication with individuals still confined within the debris, a day following the collapse of a four-storey structure in Dar es Salaam, the nation’s largest city. These teams are successfully delivering water, glucose, and oxygen supplies to them via narrow openings in the rubble. Tapping noises have been detected emanating from within the collapsed structure, situated in Dar es Salaam’s bustling Kariakoo market district. The most recent statistics provided by President Samia Suluhu Hassan indicate that 13 fatalities have been confirmed, while 84 individuals have been rescued alive to date. President Hassan stated that the prime minister would now oversee a “thorough inspection” of all structures within the Kariakoo vicinity. She further mentioned that law enforcement would gather comprehensive information regarding the collapsed building from its proprietor. Significant gatherings of onlookers applauded as emergency crews transported survivors on stretchers, navigating past substantial accumulations of concrete rubble, en route to medical facilities. Albert Chalamila, Dar es Salaam’s regional commissioner, informed The Citizen newspaper that seven individuals were extracted from the building’s basement on Sunday. He was quoted as saying, “We are hopeful that more survivors will be found.” The precise number of individuals still confined is currently unknown. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa declared that the authorities “won’t rest until we have made sure we have been able to rescue each and every person or soul who is trapped in the rubble”. Following the initial collapse of the structure around 09:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Saturday morning, hundreds of initial responders employed sledgehammers and their hands to clear the debris, as reported by the AFP news agency. Subsequently, cranes and additional heavy equipment were deployed to assist in the efforts. The collapse occurred, fortunately, prior to the market area reaching peak activity. While the cause of the collapse has not yet been ascertained by authorities, investigations are anticipated to commence once the rescue operations conclude. Dar es Salaam ranks among the globe’s most rapidly expanding urban centers, and reports indicate that construction regulations are not consistently enforced.
