Tam Shepherds Trick Shop, a venerable Glasgow establishment that asserts its status as the world’s oldest family-operated magic and joke retailer, has ceased its physical operations after 138 years. The Queen Street shop, continuously managed by the same family since 1886, will now exclusively conduct business through its online platform. The adjacent properties, previously occupied by the Archaos nightclub, are slated for conversion into student accommodation. The proprietors of the shop attributed the closure to “uncertainty over the redevelopment” and the “high costs of being a small independent shop in the city centre.” In a statement disseminated via social media, they communicated: “We are sad to announce that Saturday 9 November 2024 was the last day of trading from our long established bricks and mortar shop in Queen Street.” “Tam Shepherds will continue with our online shop supplying customers with our range of magic, tricks, jokes and costumes.” “To all our customers and friends, thank you so much for your continued custom and support. We hope to welcome you back in the future. “And thank you to Glasgow for making Tam Shepherds the shop it has been.” In August, city planners at Glasgow City Council granted approval for proposals submitted by developers Carrick Properties and CA Ventures. These plans involve the construction of a 14-storey student accommodation block, encompassing the addresses 21-41 Queen Street. This new development is projected to feature 195 beds, alongside amenities such as a cinema, a gym, and a games lounge. The site was formerly home to the Archaos nightclub, a well-known music venue, which closed its doors in 2007. The redevelopment blueprints for the building had incorporated a ground floor retail unit, which was initially intended to house Tam Shepherds. CA Ventures has been approached for comment regarding the situation.
