Ben Cabango, who made his senior Swansea City debut against Northampton Town in the League Cup in August 2019, has signed a new contract to remain with the club until the summer of 2028. The centre-back’s prior agreement with the Swans was set to conclude at the end of the ongoing season. The 24-year-old stated, “I’m really happy to have signed a new contract with Swansea City.” He added, referencing chairman Andy Coleman’s tenure and the manager’s influence: “We’ve been talking about it for a while and I think since Andy’s [chairman Andy Coleman] taken over it’s been really positive. “I’ve seen the change obviously with the gaffer as well. It’s all been more positive and everything is going in the right direction.” Luke Williams, the manager, holds the Cardiff-born defender in high regard and was part of a group – which also included chairman Coleman and captain Matt Grimes – that presented to Cabango to persuade him to agree to the new terms. Cabango, who registered a goal in a 1-1 draw against Bristol City in September, has been a crucial player under Williams, participating in every minute of Championship play this season to date. Cabango further commented on the club’s trajectory: “The path that the club is on at the moment, we will be there or there about soon. It’s going to take time and we’re starting to see the results and hopefully we can keep building.” The central defender’s performance for his club has also garnered international recognition under the new Wales manager, Craig Bellamy. Under the former Wales striker, Cabango participated in three of his country’s six Nations League fixtures, starting in victories over Montenegro and Iceland. Chairman Coleman expressed his delight, stating: “We are overjoyed to have Ben commit his future to Swansea City.” He continued: “His dedication and talent are invaluable to our team, and this new contract is a testament to our ambition and our bright future. “We made a presentation as part of the negotiations to Ben so he knew exactly how important he was to us, and this is a really exciting early Christmas present for our fans. We look forward to many more successful years with him.” The announcement of Cabango’s agreement provides a significant boost for Williams, who is also keen for Harry Darling – whose current contract concludes next summer – to sign new terms, thereby strengthening Swansea’s defensive options. Cabango, who became part of Swansea at 14 years old, has accumulated 206 appearances for the Championship team.
