A local community is experiencing distress after one of its resident swans was killed in a hit-and-run incident. Staffordshire Police reported that the animal was struck by a vehicle on Flaxman Close in Barlaston, Staffordshire, at approximately 14:00 GMT on Sunday, and the driver subsequently left the scene. Residents conveyed their profound sadness, having cultivated a close bond with the swans, which frequently depart the nearby lake to roam the estate. Matt Todd shared his perspective with BBC Radio Stoke, stating, “There was just so much anger and people panicking to try and get the swan help. It was just utter madness.” He further commented, “It was heartbreaking because they’ve become almost ubiquitous on the estate. They leave the lake and wander around. They’re not harming anyone… everyone loves them.” Resident Natasha Howells recounted that the swans often “knock on the door” seeking food and would sometimes enter her residence if the door was left open. She added, “My daughter sits there and strokes them, they are just so friendly and tame.” Howells continued, “We’ve got this relationship now where they know where we live and they know which houses to knock on.” Upon discovering the swan’s death, she expressed that she “couldn’t believe it,” adding, “We were absolutely gobsmacked.” A spokesperson for the RSPCA conveyed the organization’s sorrow upon learning of the swan’s death in the incident. They urged, “We would always urge people to be cautious when driving in an area with known wildlife and farm animals nearby and pay heed to warning signs indicating that wild animals may be around.” Staffordshire Police has appealed to anyone with information or relevant CCTV and dashcam footage to come forward.
