A Greggs bakery and takeaway, which faced a 1,000-signature petition in opposition, has now received planning permission, concluding the prolonged dispute. The chain inaugurated its new branch in Swaffham, Norfolk, last month, occupying the former QD furniture store. It has now retrospectively obtained approval for an illuminated sign and outdoor seating. The QD store, which closed last year, had remained unoccupied since. Opponents of the Greggs establishment argued that its presence would negatively impact an independent bakery within the town. Some residents who endorsed the petition asserted that the opening would be “catastrophic” for the family-operated Wellbread Bakers. Emma Godfrey, who owns the bakery with her husband, stated that they “would be forced to make redundancies if passing trade was lost due to Greggs opening,” as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. While the new Greggs did not initially require planning permission to commence operations, the chain submitted an application to Breckland Council for alterations to the store’s facade and the installation of a new air conditioning system. Despite residents’ hopes that the council would reject the application and initiate formal enforcement action against the company, councillors proceeded to grant the additional planning permission.
