A woman received a suspended prison sentence after biting off a portion of her girlfriend’s lower lip during a dispute. Sarah-Louise Elliott, aged 23, assaulted her partner of three years in March 2022, following accusations of infidelity, according to proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court. Ms. Elliott, residing in Swalwell, Gateshead, pleaded guilty to wounding without intent and was given a 21-week jail term, suspended for 18 months, along with 150 hours of unpaid community service. Judge Carolyn Scott stated that Elliott “lost her mind” and described the assault as “unacceptable”. Testimony presented in court indicated that an altercation began at the couple’s residence on the evening of 19 March, during which Elliott accused her partner of infidelity. The situation escalated into violence after the victim referred to Elliott’s mother as a “homophobic freak”, as heard by the court. Ms. Elliott, residing at Derwent Crescent, struck and kicked the woman before biting her lower lip, creating a 1in (2.5cm) tear, prosecutor Neil Pallister reported. Subsequently, she accompanied the victim to the hospital, informing ambulance personnel that she was the victim’s sister, according to court proceedings. Initially, the victim informed police that she had been assaulted en route home, but later confessed that Elliott was the one who had bitten her, Mr Pallister stated. During mitigation, Joe Culley described the relationship as “volatile,” noting that police records contained 48 pages of incident reports involving the victim with both previous partners and Elliott, dating back to 2013. He further stated that any abuse was “not one-way traffic” and that the couple had separated following the assault. Judge Scott commented that Elliott “lost her mind” after the remark concerning her mother was uttered and, rather than disengaging, proceeded with an “entirely unacceptable” assault. The judge noted that Elliott employed her teeth as a weapon, resulting in a scar for the victim; however, the long-term consequences remained uncertain, and the woman had chosen not to provide a victim impact statement. Nevertheless, the judge indicated that Elliott was assessed as being at “low risk” of reoffending and possessed the capacity for rehabilitation.
