Surrey has announced the signing of New Zealand all-rounder Nathan Smith for the upcoming 2025 season, where he is set to feature in both the T20 Blast and the County Championship. Smith first represented his country internationally in an ODI against Sri Lanka in November, followed by his Test debut two weeks later. The 26-year-old cricketer recently made his Test debut for New Zealand, known as the Kiwis, against England last month. In his initial two Test appearances, he accumulated 80 runs and claimed seven wickets. During the 2024 season, Smith participated in seven matches for Worcestershire. His performance included taking 27 wickets with his pace bowling and contributing 214 runs at an average of 30.5. Throughout his first-class career, Smith has played 55 matches, securing 151 wickets and scoring 1,999 runs. He is scheduled to link up with Surrey in May. “I have only heard great things about the club, and I look forward to hopefully contributing to continuing the remarkable success the club has had in recent years,” Smith stated on the club’s website. He added, “I loved my time at Worcestershire last year and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity they gave me to come and play county cricket. I would like to thank all of the amazing people at the club there, it was not an easy decision to not return.” Smith concluded, “However, the chance to join one of the best counties in the country was one I couldn’t turn down.” Smith commenced his cricketing career in New Zealand with Otago, subsequently moving to Wellington in 2021, and then to Worcestershire this year.
