On Sunday, the Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum conducted its yearly celebration, drawing an attendance of over 80 individuals. The forum states its mission is to advocate for the requirements of more than 55 distinct groups across the county, a demographic that constitutes over 20% of Surrey’s total population. The gathering, which took place at the Xcel Leisure Complex in Walton-on-Thames, saw participants illustrate a lengthy white silk fabric with words and images, conveying their perspectives on race equity and integration. This activity symbolized the historical Silk Road, known for fostering cultural, political, and religious exchanges. Saba Khan, the chief executive of the Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum, conveyed to BBC Radio Surrey that “Integration is something that’s always needed.” She further elaborated, “I think as our societies change and we’re faced with new challenges – whether that is economic challenges or race riots – whatever shape it takes, we then have to adjust and adapt methods of integration.” The program featured live musical acts, including performances by Hungarian schoolchildren, songs presented by a Baha’i faith group, and an energetic performance of “Singin’ In The Rain” by Langton Chipagula of Global Grooves. A workshop provided a platform for discussions on integration and race equity, which were central themes of the gathering. Neelam Devesher, who serves as the chair of the Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum, has been affiliated with the organization since its establishment over ten years prior. The forum aims to strengthen Surrey’s ethnic minority communities through offering assistance to community groups, fostering connections among faith groups, and executing initiatives designed to aid residents throughout the county. Ms. Devesher stated, “We organise regular events to provide a range of health checks in different communities.” She further recounted an instance from earlier this year where “a man had very high blood pressure so he was at risk so he was taken straight to hospital.” For updates, follow BBC Surrey on Facebook and X.
