Surrey County Council has identified £57 million in budget reductions for the 2025/26 financial year. The cabinet of the Conservative-led authority gave its approval to the preliminary document on Tuesday. The council stated its intention to prioritize essential services and committed to achieving a balanced budget. Tim Oliver, the council leader, cautioned that “there is more to do to” achieve a balanced budget. He stated: “All our key services, including social care, children’s services, and highways maintenance – are facing higher demand, higher costs, and reduced funding.“We must find ways to continue to support those residents who need us most, and to deliver the services that people rely on every day.” The initial budget proposal underwent public consultation from August to September, with an additional consultation period scheduled to conclude on 31 December. The suggested financial strategies encompass four primary objectives: fostering economic growth, addressing health disparities, “enable a greener future,” and establishing “empowered and thriving” communities. The budget is slated for formal approval in January, preceding a full council election scheduled for 1 May.
