Ofsted has awarded an outstanding rating to a children’s residential facility in Surrey that provides care for children and young people living with learning or neurodevelopmental disabilities. Located in Woking, Ruth House secured the highest possible grade across all assessment categories from the inspectors. The inspection report commended the “creative” staff for ensuring that the children’s “voices [to] be heard and their views are valued”. Ruth House operates as one of the twelve residential children’s homes managed by Surrey County Council. The facility accommodates and cares for a maximum of 12 children simultaneously. According to the report, “The processes that are followed when children move into and out of the home are exceptionally thoughtful.” Before children relocate to the home, managers and staff collaborate closely with their parents and relevant professionals to acquire a comprehensive understanding of each child’s specific needs. Furthermore, preparations for children’s transitions to adult placements commence several months prior to their departure. Clare Curran, the cabinet member for children, families and lifelong learning, stated that “Ruth House provides crucial support not only for the children and young people in their care, but their families too.” She added, “I am extremely proud of Ruth House and the professionals who work there for the remarkable outcomes they achieve for Surrey young people, and the steps they take to ensure that the child’s best interests are always promoted.”
