The city chosen to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup opener, featuring England and the US, plans to strengthen its “special relationship” with its visitors. Sunderland’s Stadium of Light has been designated as the venue for the tournament’s commencement next summer, scheduled for August 22. Nearby, Washington Old Hall serves as the ancestral home of the first US president, George Washington, and over 3,000 individuals are employed by US companies situated in and around the area. Sunderland City Council leader Michael Mordey described the event as “incredibly exciting,” adding, “we are very much looking forward to welcoming the US team and their fans.” Tickets for all matches will become available for purchase on Tuesday at 11:00 GMT. Organizers hope the tournament will achieve a similar impact on women’s rugby union in England as the Lionesses did on women’s football, following their victory in the home European Championships in 2022. RWC2025 managing director Sarah Massey characterized the competition as a “showcase” of “the very best of women’s rugby.” Sunderland established a Friendship Agreement with the US capital, Washington DC, in 2006. The city council noted that several companies, including Nissan, AESC, Adient, and Vantec, maintain facilities in both Sunderland and the US. Mordey stated that the opening fixture is expected to generate “a really electric atmosphere.” He further remarked, “Hosting the opening game is a wonderful opportunity and fantastic for our city and region to shine on the international stage at a time when Sunderland city centre is going through a £2 billion transformation, so it’s brilliant news all round.” Post navigation Positive Indicators Emerge for West Ham Under Lopetegui Semenyo Discusses Victory and Team Prospects
